EXPEDITIONS AND EXPLORATIONS.

1. Paraguay Expedition.—The United States' exploring steamer " Argentina," Captain Page, was to leave Buenos Ayres about the 20th April, for the Rio Paraguay, accompanied by the small steamer " Alpha." The expeditionvessels will proceed, in the first instance, direct to the sources of the Paraguay, and will then ascend the Pilcomayo. The "Argentina" will go as far as her draught will permit her, when the explorers will embark in the Alpha.

U.S. Survey of the Rio La Plata ( 1858-18-) . The oldest label borne by this specimen has printed on its label the words "U.S. Steamer Argentina./Capt. T. J. Page, U.S.N." Information on this ship is given by Page, in La Plata, The Argentine Confederaction , and Paraguay (1859, p.xxii)

Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Volume 7
By Massachusetts Historical Society

In the spring of 1861, I built and sent to China, in pieces, on board the bark "Palmetto," an iron paddle-wheel boat, which was set up in Shanghae, and called the "Hyson," which went into the interior waters of the Yangtsekiang; and, in the autumn of the same year, I sent out to Shanghae another iron paddle-wheel steamer, seventy-five by sixteen feet, on the deck of the schooner " Calliope," of two hundred and fifty-six tons. She was completed at Shanghae, and was called the " Tsatlee ;" and she also plied on the tributaries of the Yangtsekiang. These two iron boats were the first of their kind, under the American flag, which plied on the waters of that river.

Notes on navigation. By R.B. Forbes. . Forbes, R. B. (Robert Bennet), 1804-1889.

To resume my narrative in regard to steam vessels and other small craft — In 1861, at the suggestion of a friend in China who was interested, I built an iron paddle wheel boat about 75 feet long by 16 beam, and three iron barges, the latter were constructed to fit the one within the other, making a nest of three, the inner one complete, the others with decks temporarily fastened. When all were ready, they were securely stowed on the deck of the three-masted schooner " Calliope," a
vessel built for carrying deck loads having plenty of beam. She sailed on or about the 24th of September, under command of Charles Kinsman, and went to China by the eastern passage. She was obliged to put in at the Cape of Good Hope, in consequence of a very curious accident. One day while exposed to great heat in a calm, the fore-gaflf-topsail was The deck load was well secured by cross beams fastened to bolts in the bends and through deck beams; the nest of barges was stowed on the port side, and the steamer on the other. As she could not be stowed clear of the mainmast, a hole was left for the mainmast to be shipped through. The starboard rigging was extended by widening the channels so that the shrouds should not be chafed. Considerable hesitation occurred on the part of the underwriters, who croaked a good deal about the heavy deck load, the probable crankness of the schooner, etc.; but, as she had a cargo of domestic goods and coal, and was built to carry deck loads of hard pine and molasses weighing more than the light iron boats, I had more reason to fear her being too stiff than crank. When Captain Kinsman wrote from the Cape, he never mentioned his deck load as an incumbrance. In June of the same year, 1861, I shipped on board of the bark "Palmetto" for the same owners, a paddle wheel steamer of iron. These boats arrived safely at Shanghae, and were sold to the Chinese governmeut at the time of the Taeping rebellion, when General Gordon distinguished himself so bravely in quelling it. Those who read the history of his life, will see that these little boats, under the names "Hyson" and "Tsatlee" were very actively employed by him. The party who was interested with me, who was in China at the time, lately said that "they put down the rebellion." They were sold for a very large profit, owing to the unprecedentedly large gain on exchange between here and London. The boat per "Palmetto" went out in pieces. discovered to be on fire. Considerable damage was done to the foresail and to the rigging. As no one had been aloft, the only way to account for the fire was from the friction of the gaff on some of its attachments.
