"Graf Spee salvage – work begins!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If any of you ever wanted to go to Montevideo to dive the wreck of the Graf Spee, you missed your chance. The wreck is now off limits, and the project to salvage the ship is about to begin.
With the financial backing of the Uruguayan Government and a private German firm, a team of salvage experts led by noted wreck explorer Hector Bado will begin work Tuesday. Their goal is to re-float both the main section of the hull and the severed stern, and tow them to the large drydock at Montevideo for repair and restoration. The salvage effort is scheduled to last three years, while repairs and the construction of a museum pier for the display of the vessel with take another two. The restored vessel is expected to be a major tourist attraction, and the press coverage is expected to be a boom for the nation also. No doubt there will be a film crew working on a documentary, with companion book and home DVD set to help offset some of the costs of salvage.
The first step in the process is to lighten the hull by removing the forward turret with a heavy-lift floating crane. Efforts have already begun to locate the rear turret, which is buried in the mud somewhere in the vicinity of the wreck, having been blow clear in the explosion of the aft magazine that severed the stern. Once the hull has been lightened sufficiently, work will begin to seal it.
As the bottom is so soft and muddy, a cofferdam is out of the question, so I imagine that compressed air and salvage pontoons will be used to add buoyancy, while high-pressure water is used to break the hull free from the mud. As more details of the salvage operation become available, I’ll post them here.
Man, that’s a job I REALLY WANT!!
Bob"
Interesujące ale nie wiem co o tym mysleć. Przecież koszty (nie mówiąc o trudnościach technicznych) takiego przedsięwziecia będą kosmiczne.
