The /Halcon/, an 83-foot wooden customs and fisheries patrol boat to be stationed at Ensenada, was launched 20 August 1941 at the Harbor Boat Works original yard at Belt Street at San Diego. The yard moved to the foot of 28th Street that November. At the time of the launching the Mexican government had given the yard two more contracts for identical vessels. However, by the time the /Halcon /was ready to be delivered it was unable to obtain clearance by the federal government to leave San Diego. That problem seems to have been solved eventually. The head of Harbor Boat Works complained to the local San Diego /Union /newspaper that smaller yards like his were being ignored in the distribution of shipbuilding materials and he couldn't immediately finish the /Halcon /nor//act upon the other two contracts. There is no mention in the paper about the other contracts ever being fulfilled by Harbor. Since they would have been acted upon post-Pearl Harbor, I cannot imagine they could have been honored. I note that in the 1965-1966 /Jane's /a /Nereida /is listed as a "former patrol boat adapted as a fleet tug," but is listed as a steam powered craft while the /Halcon /had twin Diesels. Harbor Boat Works did produce small craft for the navy, buoy boats, and for the Department of the Interior during the war, but I suspect the Mexican vessels were built elsewhere, most likely Mexico. Many sources seem to confuse the Harbor Boat Works of San Diego with the Harbor Boat Building Company of Los Angeles, which did have a relatively large World War II wooden shipbuilding program.
