Western Morning News, Monday, 16 November 1885
THE GREEK NAVY
Athens, Sunday,
The Greek Government has contracted for the supply of sixty guns to the navy and for the loan of nineteen million drachmas
St James's Gazette, Friday, 5 March 1886
THE GREEK NAVY. The Greek Government have had representatives in Glasgow during the past few days inspecting vessels with a view to the strengthening of their navy. They have completed the purchase of a deep-sea steamer of 720 tons from a well-known local firm. The vessel was built on the Clyde a year or,two ago, and is capable of steaming 15 1/4 knots an hour. Sir William Armstrong and Co., Newcastle, have supplied the armament. Ihe vessel was to leave for Greece to-day. Another Clyde-built steamer, belonging to Hull, has also been acquired by the Greek Government and sailed from this country some time since. The Turkish Government had likewise Commissioners in this country in search of vessels ; but when the British fleet was sent to Suda Bay the Commissioners were recalled and the negotiations in progress were broken off.
