Stocznie Baltimore (Chesapeake Bay)

Post autor: AvM »

Niles' weekly register, Band 42
25 June 1832

Baltimore. The business of ship-building was never before so lively in this city as at the present time—but Not on account of the West India trade! A correspondent of the Gazette has the following list of vessels building—saving that several others are ordered:

At Robb ec Donaldson's yard a brig of 250tons
Gardner's " a ship of 500tons
Beacham's " a ship of 500tons
Duncan's " a ship of 500tons
Price's " a brig of 240tons
Kennard's a large ship
Dorgan & Baily's " two large ships
Miles' a large schooner
Stevens' " a schooner
Culley's " a ship

At Skinner's yard, besides the beautiful steam boat "Patrick Henry," lately built by Mr. Gardner, and which is now there receiving her machinery—there is, on the stocks in a state of great forwardness, a steam boat, which, from present appearances, bills fair to surpass any thing of the kind on the waters of the Chesapeake.

Baltimore Clippers." The following compliment in reference to American vessels, is from "The Adventures of a Younger Son;"—a recent work of great interest, from the pen of Trelawny, a companion of lord Byron. The encomium thus passed, we may well believe, is altogether deserved, in its most general application:—

* • An American vessel **The first vessel we fell in w-ith was a schooner, which, after a long chase, we made out to be an American. As soon as she discovered we were French, she hove too. She Wsb a beautiful vessel, long, low in the water, with lofty raking masts, which tapered away until they were almost too fine to be distinguished, and the swallow-tailed vanes above fluttered like fire-flies. The starred-flag waved over her tafi'rail. As she filled and hauled on a wind, to cross under our stern, with a fresh breeze to which she gently heeled, I thought there was nothing so beautiful as the arrowy sharpneis of her bow, and the gradually receding fineness of her quarters. She looked and moved like an Arab horse in the desert, and was as obedient to command. There was a lightness and bird-like buoyancy about her, that exclusively belongs to this class of vessels. America has the merit ot having perfected this nautical wonder, us far surpassing all other vessels in exquisite proportion and beauty, as the gazelle excels all animated nature.—Even to this day, no other country has succeeded in either the building or the working of these vessels, in comparison with America."
